Free at last, Rasheeda has a lot to say

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, May 2: ``I have a lot of things to say, but not today,'' Mariam Rasheeda, who was the second accused in the ISRO spy case, told The Indian Express. ``I am waiting for my counsel Prasad Gandhi to turn up. Perhaps, I will tell you tomorrow,'' she said at her hotel room here on arriving from Thrissur after her release from the Viyyur Central Jail.
Visibly elated by her new-found freedom, Mariam Rasheeda posed for pictures. The relief following the end of a nearly four-year jail term was writ large on her face. ``I am happy that I am free,'' she said.

Rasheeda, whose passport expired on April 28, was expecting her travel documents to arrive from her country, Maldives. ``I don't know how long I will have to stay here for getting the documents. Maybe a month,'' she said.

``Not that long. The travel documents may come tomorrow itself,'' Vinod, Prasad Gandhi's junior, intervened.

Policemen still kept vigil outside her room at the KTDC-run Chaitram Hotel. Her lawyer had asked forpolice protection for security reasons.

Mariam Rasheeda arrived here around 5 pm, accompanied by police personnel from Thrissur and signed her release papers at the office of the Police Commissioner.

Earlier, in the morning, Mariam Rasheeda was handed over to the local police by the Viyyur jail authorities, ENS adds from Thrissur.

According to the State Government's instructions, she was then taken to Thiruvananthapuram by road and handed over to the City Police Commissioner.Mariam was released after the Government revoked her detention yesterday following the Supreme Court judgment in the ISRO spy case on April 29. She refused to talk to mediapersons waiting outside the jail.

She also refused to pose for photographs. She covered her face with her sari while walking from the jail gate towards the police vehicle in which she was taken to Thiruvananthapuram with heavy police escort.
